The Cumbernauld Greenspaces consist of four Nature Reserves: Luggiebank, Forest
Woods, Northside Woods, and Cumbernauld Glen.
Luggiebank
Situated beyond Lenziemill Industrial Estate, this area provides a valuable wildlife habitat. 42 hectares of woodland and grasslands along the banks of the Luggie Water upstream and downstream of Luggiebank Village. Under the ancient woodland along the Luggie Water, the ground flora is rich and diverse, with bluebells, red campion, golden saxifrage, and stitchwort to be found.
Forest Woods
Lying on the southern edge of Cumbernauld from Forest Road to Palacerigg Country Park, Forest Woods straddles the Slammannan Road and incudes the smaller, separate area of Glencryan Wood, which lies to the west of Mid Forest Farm.
Northside Woods
Covering nearly 70 hectares, this strip of woodland runs alongside the A80, from Cumbernauld village to Ravenswood playing fields. The Reserve acts as a wildlife corridor, allowing animals to move safely from the north to the south.
Cumbernauld Glen
Cumbernauld Glen is a beautiful ancient woodland in the heart of Cumbernauld, providing a haven for wildlife and an important recreational space for local people. Badgers, roe deer and foxes make their home here as well as all kinds of woodland birds. Butterflies such as ringlet, meadow brown and small pearl bordered fritillary make use of the meadow areas.
