We had a great meeting on Tuesday 17th March in Dunoon with Lewis Pate, Project Officer of SWT Save Scotland’s Red Squirrel project giving us a talk on his vital work in defending the reds against the greys. His description of trying to shake off a red squirrel whose teeth are imbedded in your finger was hilarious. But the seriousness of the problems caused by the greys was the main thrust of the evening and it really brought it home to us all how close reds are coming to extinction , how ever-vigilant we need to be for evidence of greys and how lucky we are in Cowal still to have such wonderful creatures living closeby. Jan Ferguson, Chair of the Cowal Red Squirrel Group brought along a wonderful showcase display of facts ,figures and pictures , put together to raise awareness of the great work the group does to help keep the local squirrels safe. Jan is urgently looking for hands-on volunteers to help in the woods The new SWT members group here will do all it can to help promote and support this work. If any of you are keen to help, please get in touch with Jan on 01369 870346
Our steering group is meeting to draw up a new programme for Autumn , and Nigel Scriven of Cowal Natural History Society is keen to have a joint event with us. We will also be looking at ways of promoting the area by bringing members of SWT to visit .Anyone who could offer an accommodation discount to SWT members holidaying in the area would be welcome to advertise in our newsletter as it goes out to members living in nine local authorities
Would any members who would like to offer help or have ideas for our involvement, please get in touch. with pastclyde@talktalk.net
